When importing a custom test, each question and all of the information associated with it can be thought of as a Record. Each piece of information associated with each question can be thought of as a Field. (A typical question Record has a Question Text Field, Answer Text Fields, and possibly other fields such as Question Points.).
Before importing your test, the file you're trying to import must have the following properties:
A comma-delimited text file must have a carriage return ("^p" in Microsoft Word's Find and Replace) between each test Record and a comma between each Field. (i.e. question1 field1, question1 field2, question1 field3, question1 field4... carriage return, question2 field1, question2 field2...)
In Excel, each Record must start in a new row, and each Field must start in a new column (have it's own cell in that row).
Your file must have Fields in the same column from one Record to the next to import the test correctly. For example, the Question Text Field for all of the questions must be in the same column of your Excel file, or the same number of commas from the last carriage return in your comma-delimited file.
Note: If you have problems formatting your test correctly, export test questions from Test Generator into your test’s format. Choose File > Export > Test Questions in the Test Generator main window.
Click File > Import > from Custom Tests in the Test Generator main window.
Select the type of file to import from the Files of Type drop-down menu in the Import File Name dialog box. If your test is a Microsoft Excel 5.0 or 8.0(97) file, it has the format testname.xls . If your test is a comma-delimited text file, it has the format: testname.txt.
Locate your file and click Open.
In the Import Tests dialog box, the left side contains a list of the records you imported and all of their fields (columns). The right side contains a list of Test Generator fields to assign to the imported field columns on the left.
The only fields required by Test Generator are the Question Text field and one Answer field, but you should obviously assign as many fields as possible here.
To assign fields, highlight a column on the left, then double-click the appropriate field on the right. The field name appears at the top of the column and disappears from the list on the right.
Repeat this process for as many fields as possible.
Click Next.
You must set the Question Type and Question Points if you did not assign these fields to your records in the previous step. Highlight a row by clicking it, or highlight multiple rows by clicking and dragging, then select a Question Type from the drop-down menu on the left. It appears in the left Question Type column.
Repeat this process for the Points.
Click Next.
Type a name for your test in the space provided. Then select a class from the list on the left, or create a new class by clicking the New Class button.
Click Finish.
A confirmation message tells you your test questions have been imported.
