Question Bank: Importing and Exporting

Assumptions/Best Practices

• Prior to creating your test, you created one or more question banks (subjects).

• All of your test questions are associated with one subject or your test contains groups of questions associated with more than one subjects (e.g., group 1/subject A, etc.).

• You have published your test, analyzed the test data and determined that all or some of these test questions are worth exporting into the question bank. Note: if creating a test based on items given previously in a paper-and-pencil test and you feel confident with the item analysis done at that time, you have the option of creating a temporary test, assigning subjects to your items and then exporting these items to the question bank. Once the items are exported to their respective banks, you can either delete the test or save it.

In some settings this level of analysis is not practical or possible. Questions exported from a test into a question bank may not have been thoroughly evaluated and may therefore be questionable items. If you store the bad items along with the good items, you run the risk of creating a "garbage in, garbage out" environment, making it more difficult to assess your testing audience accurately.

1. Open your test to the summary window (the first window you see when you open a test).

2. From the summary window you have the option of:

3. Selecting (highlighting) a single question (row) or multiple questions by shift-clicking a group of questions,
   
   OR

4. Selecting the first cell in the first (left) column in the summary table. This highlights all of the items in the table.

3. Select File > Export...to TG Question Bank. This copies one or multiple questions (depending on which option you chose under Step 2) to the question banks they were associated with. Note: If the question was not assigned to a subject, it appears under Questions without a subject under Question Bank.

4. To view the exported questions, return to the main menu by clicking the Return To Main Menu icon. Under the Tree Directory, select the Question Bank module and then select one of the banks associated with your test items. When you click the bank, you should see a copy of the related test questions.
   
   If there were multiple subjects and you exported all of the questions at the same time, TG copies the questions into their respective banks. Look under each bank to view a copy of the exported questions.

Assumptions

• You have just created a new (blank) test
  or

• Your test may already contain some questions
  or

• You have created (but not published) your test.

• The banks you are selecting contain questions for importing.

• The questions you are importing are known, good items.

• The questions are complete:

• The question and answer fields contain copy.

• A correct answer has been selected and One or more question parameters have been selected

1. From your tests summary window, select File > Import from TG Question Bank.
   
   The Import Questions window appears:

2. The left side of this window contains the list of subjects from the Test Generator Question Bank (including a folder of Questions without a subject). Select the appropriate subject folder, and highlight the questions you want to import in the right side of the Import Questions window.
   
   Tip: Shift + Click to highlight multiple questions or click the first (top) cell, first column to highlight all of the items in the table.

3. Click the Import button

Note: The Import Questions window remains open, giving you the option of importing other question bank items. When you are finished, click the Close button on the Import Questions window.

Questions imported from the Test Generator Question Bank can be edited and modified like any other test questions.
