Test Settings > New Question

Matching questions can have up to five answer choices. Each answer consists of two answer fields separated into two columns. The objective: match one item in the left column with the corresponding item in the right column.

A matching question might instruct the test taker to match the capital of a state (left column) to the correct state (list of the states, right column). For example, Phoenix, an answer item in the left column, has a corresponding “match” in the right column, Arizona. The test taker clicks the selection box next to Phoenix and then selects the matching state, Arizona, from the right column. Phoenix has a number next to it and Arizona has that same number next to it – assuming the test taker chose correctly.

  1. Click the blue +Q, Question button, or select Test Settings > New Question. A list of the 11 question types appears.

  2. Select Matching. The yellow box at the center of the window displays the Matching question-type.

  3. Enter your directions in the yellow box at the center of the window. Delete, or type over, the introductory text. Type your question as you want it to appear on the test.

  4. Click the red +A Answer button at the top of the window (next to the +Q button). By default, four answer boxes appear below the question box. These four answer boxes represent two answer matches. You can add additional answers (up to 10 answer boxes) by clicking the red "+A" answer button. You can also add/remove answer groups by right clicking in the answer field and selecting “Add” or “Remove” answers.

  5. Click the mouse in each answer field and enter the answer text as you want it to appear on the test.

  6. Click the mouse on the small box directly beside the answer field to notate the number for each match.

  7. The answer fields that match share the same number. (1-1, 2-2, 3-3, etc.)

  8. If you find the matches entered are incorrect they can be modified by clicking the number box next to the answer. These can be changed around to reflect the correct matches.

  9. For a random display of answers, click the Show Answers Randomly icon (image\random_question_icon.gif) or select Test Settings > Show Answers Randomly.

    Note
: Random answers must be set for each question individually; it does not apply to the entire test.
